Memorial Scholarship
The Carl Tews Memorial Scholarship is intended to provide financial support to students to enable them to pursue post-secondary education. This scholarship is funded by the Edson Veterinary Clinic in honour of Carl Tews who was a man with a beautiful passion for agriculture and learning. The number of scholarships awarded each year is dependent on the number of qualified applicants. Students may apply for this scholarship for consecutive years so long as the requirements continue to be met.
Requirements

Students should show a strong desire to work in veterinary medicine although agriculture interests will also be considered.
Applicants must be from Yellowhead County
A 500-word essay is to be submitted providing details on the following:
- Why are you applying for this scholarship?
- What are your interests regarding veterinary medicine and/or agriculture?
- What are you planning to do with this scholarship if you receive it?
Transcripts from your most recent school year are to be submitted
2 reference letters are to be provided
Proof of enrollment in post-secondary school
The dollar value of each scholarship will never be less than $500.00. It may be greater if fewer students apply and will be dependent on the number of applications each year.
The applicant must be graduating high school or in post-secondary school and pursuing a career in an aspect of Veterinary Medicine or agriculture
Deadline for application is September 1
Successful scholarship candidates will be contacted directly by the Edson Veterinary Clinic team by October 15
There is no age limit for this application, repeat applicant are welcome
2024 Scholarship Winners
Spencer Smith (pictured) – Spencer is a vet student at the University of Calgary. He hopes to pursue his dream of becoming a board-certified small animal surgeon. His plans also include staying in Alberta and becoming a practice owner.
Mackenzie Kvatum (pictured) – Mackenzie is currently studying for her Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences at the U of C and plans to later apply for vet school there. Her particular passion is for improving animal welfare, the human animal bond, and the welfare of those in the veterinary industry.
Cassidy Davis (pictured) – Cassidy is a Veterinary Technology student at Lakeland College. She was raised on a farm with cattle, sheep, and goats. She has been a member of the Carrot Creek 4-H beef program for many years and now raises her own goats. She looks forward to her education helping many farm animals in the future.
Tianna DeLeeuw (pictured) – Tianna is a Veterinary Technology student at Lakeland College. She also plans on taking the Bovine Pregnancy Testing and AI course for vet techs once she has graduated. She has grown her love of farming through her membership in the 4-H beef program and hopes to use her education to aid both the veterinary and agricultural industries.
Morgan Steffler (pictured) – Morgan is a pre-vet student at the U of A and hopes to attend vet school at the University of Calgary. She has grown her love of animal health through her experiences with equine competitive eventing and her work on a dairy farm. She has also discovered a passion for working with wildlife both in a hospital and research setting. She hopes to one day work in a mixed animal practice in rural Alberta.
Brian Birkenhagen (pictured) – Brian is a vet student at the University of Calgary. His childhood on a cattle farm created a passion for all aspects of cattle management at both the cow/calf and feedlot levels. His plans once graduated are to return to practice in a rural community. He hopes to assist his beef, dairy, and hobby farm clients to keep a strong, healthy herd and maintain their ethical and humane practices.
Emily Falardeau – Emily is in the Olds College Animal Health Technology Program.
